On his initial day in office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “transform” America's largest city, declaring “a fresh chapter” and an ambitious beginning to his administration.

A Historic Leader

The new figure, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

An Ambitious Platform

Mamdani now faces one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform featuring:

• Fare-free public buses
• A cap on rents for approximately 1 million households
• A experiment of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion expense of these initiatives may be challenging to finance. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.
