The Tottenham defender found the net on two occasions as Tottenham extended their winning streak on the road in the top division and handed the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the end of last season.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman struck twice from set-pieces in the first half to place their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were unable to mount a comeback before the midfielder - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - headed home a third to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien believed he had equalized the scores five minutes after the defender's first goal, glancing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a handful of opportunities, while Vicario made a series of fine saves to ensure Tottenham went five matches on the road without defeat in the Premier League.

But the VAR stepped in, advising the match official to review the score on the pitchside monitor and the referee decided that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

This victory elevates Thomas Frank's side up to third in the division, five points off local foes and leaders the Gunners.

Everton stay in 14th position and sit six points ahead of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven fulfils role at both ends of the field

After a uninspiring midweek display in the Champions League against the French side, where they mustered a mere attempts on goal, the manager chose Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The summer signing was failed to make much of an impact before being replaced for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Defender the Dutchman converted into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with the midfielder heading the ball toward the face of goal for an free Van de Ven to head home.

And the captain - filling in as captain in Cristian Romero's absence - notched his second in added time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to nod in.

Van de Ven was equally impressive in defensive duties, partnering well with Kevin Danso as the duo dealt excellently with the 34 crosses thrown their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees lacking finishing touch

The club's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the freshness may have faded somewhat and fans flocked to the exits after the midfielder's final goal for Spurs.

The break in Everton's winning streak at home will not be a major worry for the manager, but their striker situation will be.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' pair of established strikers - had scored just one league goal between them before Sunday's match.

And they were failed to add to that miserable tally on a damp and dreary evening on Merseyside.

Beto's performance was summed up when he chose to overhead kick a clear chance from close range, even with having room and opportunity to reposition for a more conventional attempt that would have tested the keeper.

The substitute, too, failed to make an impact after coming on for the starter in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a shortage of opportunity. Most of Everton's offensive moves came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who relentlessly delivered dangerous crosses into the Tottenham penalty area.
