The Mighty Nein's Introductory Sequence Chose the Incorrect Popular RPG Show Track
The Mighty Nein, the newest animated adventure from Critical Role, revealed a new opening credits. It showcases our favorite cast of misfits, outcasts, and criminals kicking ass and making their mark, while also hinting at multiple agonizing personal histories for characters such as Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and another actor's orc warlock, Fjord.
Overall, the intro looks stunning. However, I felt that something was lost in the music selection.
This sequence uses "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar composition composed by artist the talented musician. This piece from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second one released by the production company's record label their music brand. It's a wonderful sentimental option, and I suspect that fans of the second campaign will appreciate its presence.
But for me, The Mighty Nein's intro doesn't quite capture the excitement and energy that accompanied the show's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", written by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit for me when it was first revealed in 2015, and it improved further when co-founder Sam Riegel wrote words to the melody for the series' animated intro in the later year.
Featuring vocals from one actress, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the song was catchy and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't seen the follow-up series yet, but this was such an earworm that I still saved it on my device. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you start an episode of fantasy hijinks.
The Mighty Nein's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the same chords for me. It's an impressive piece of music, but based on my understanding of this party, I feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.
Of course, Critical Role has stated that the series will have a few changes and variations from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its intro appears as one of them.
This animated adventure will be released on the streaming service from November 19. For those eager until then, or want a head start to get to know the personas of the second series, the actual play are accessible on Spotify and YouTube.
