SNAP Payments Set to End for Over 40 Million Throughout Continuing US Government Shutdown

Federal agriculture authorities stated this past weekend that monthly food benefits under one of the country’s largest support systems will not be distributed next month due to the ongoing government funding lapse.

Closure Continues For Nearly Four Weeks

The federal closure was in nearly a month when the announcement was made, which followed appeals by more than two hundred Democratic representatives urging the department to tap into reserve accounts to pay for next month's benefits.

“Ultimately, the well has run dry,” the department confirmed. “At this time, there will be no benefits issued” beginning in November.

Widespread Impact

Tens of millions of people rely on the regular assistance, as reported by official statistics. Various areas, including New Mexico, reliance on this assistance is as high as one-fifth of the population.

Internal communications seen by Reuters revealed that the department decided against using emergency reserves for November food benefits.

Legislative Deadlock

Republicans and Democrats remain deadlocked regarding how to fund and reopen federal agencies.

Comments by the director at a budget research center noted that the administration had opportunities to prepare in advance to ensure continuous assistance.

“It could have, and should have made moves before now to make arrangements to use these funds,” the comments added. “Instead, officials could opt out to secure political leverage” as conservative leaders work to pressure Senate Democrats to vote for a funding package that would reopen federal functions.

Local Responses

Governors in Louisiana and Virginia issued emergency declarations recently to make money available for hunger relief expecting nutrition assistance payments stopping during the upcoming period.
