Pedro Forward Fires Treble as Chelsea Provide Liam Rosenior with Joyous Homecoming to Hull City

Amid freezing rain, flurries, and a swirling wind off the waters of the Humber, combined with a determined home side pushing hard for a top-flight place, this had all the ingredients of a difficult evening’s task for Chelsea.

"We could have scored more but Hull are a good team and it was a difficult fixture; I’m delighted with the display," the manager stated. "Hull City is very special to me so it was great to get a positive reception from both sets of fans. The attitude of the players was excellent."

The Chelsea manager has this city dear to him, given part of his relatives are from Hull and his successful period in management of the Championship club. His positive connection was extended with a commanding performance from his team, who ultimately strolled into the fifth round of the FA Cup.

Deadly Finishing Secures Comprehensive Victory

Three days after surrendering a 2-0 advantage in the Premier League, there was a sniff of vulnerability about them going into this intriguing cup clash. The packed Hull support clearly felt it too, but the London side handled the challenge perfectly.

The manager rang the changes, making multiple of them to his starting lineup. The match might and perhaps should have been decided earlier than it eventually was, with two the Brazilian winger and Liam Delap at fault for spurning glorious chances to put their side ahead in the opening period.

However, luckily for the away team, Pedro Neto was in a far more clinical frame of mind. He broke the deadlock with a marvellous long-range effort, which acted as the spark for Chelsea to assume control of the match. By the final whistle, they had 4 goals, with the forward scoring three of them for a brilliant hat-trick.

Delap's Response and Impact

Hull showed great fight throughout, but the better opportunities always came to the visitors. Estêvão should have broken the deadlock when he rounded goalkeeper Dillon Phillips before inexplicably shooting over. The striker then had a similar horror moment in front of goal against his old team.

He blocked a Phillips's kick which came off the crossbar, and he began to run away believing the ball had gone over the line. It hadn’t, and by the time he understood, Hull's backline had responded to clear the threat.

The player had his head in his hands after that moment, but he was hugely instrumental from that point onward, registering three key passes. The opening was for the opening goal as his through ball teed up his teammate to score from range. Shortly after the second half began, it was 2-0 as Neto's set-piece went straight in under Phillips's legs.

Contest Sealed and Focus Turns

Seven minutes after Neto’s second, the tie was effectively ended as a dazzling run from the forward laid on Estêvão to slide into an empty net. The hat-trick hero then completed his treble as the provider again played the decisive pass for the attacker to calmly slot past a stranded Phillips.

By that stage, the work Hull had done in the opening thirty minutes had long since erased. Their priority must now switch back to achieving a promotion to the Premier League under Sergej Jakirovic, who left out several first-choice players with that aim in mind.

"I think we earned at least one goal but if we perform like this we will be in a very good situation in the league," he said. "Keep fighting, maybe in the next games this can be a good lesson of how we must play."

There was great effort to the final whistle, and they almost got a consolation when a substitute hit a the upright in stoppage time. But this was the Blues' evening, and another encouraging step forward for their recently-appointed head coach at a stadium he is familiar with intimately.

Cup History Are Promising

That resulted in an ultimately routine evening’s work, and the FA Cup-shaped omens are positive from here for Chelsea. They have played Hull on three previous occasions in this competition in the last decade and every single time, they have progressed to make the showpiece. There is still done in that respect, but this was another significant tick for the Chelsea boss.
