Manchester City Three Goals to Nil Manchester United: Lauren Hemp on target in City stroll.

Just as Storm Claudia swept through the north-west the prior day, City swept United aside at the Etihad. It was a convincing three-nil win for their manager's side owing to goals from Knaak, Shaw and Hemp. It was a display that firmly established their championship potential as they reinforced their standing at the WSL pinnacle.

Back-to-Back Losses for United

This result marked consecutive league setbacks for Skinner's side for the first time since May 2024, leaving them a sizable gap off the table toppers with their championship aspirations severely dented.

The Red Devils' capacity to juggle domestic and European football with a thin squad has been a frequently analyzed topic since they earned a place in the UCL. Reviewing the schedule, it always appeared this was the matchday that would truly test this ability. Sadly for the visitors, they seemed weary all game, the landmark win against Paris Saint-Germain clearly having left its mark.

Team Changes

Skinner had sought to freshen things up with a several alterations. Toone, Terland, Dominique Janssen and Leah Galton all added freshness, although the exclusion of the high-performing Melvine Malard to the bench raised a few eyebrows.

Manchester City, in comparison, have no such workload issues. Andrée Jeglertz made a single alteration from the previous win over the Toffees with Hemp making her first start since returning from a fitness issue.

Overpowering Start

The trouble started to gather for the United boss and his side from the opening minute. This was a demonstration of the power from Manchester City whose dynamic forward line controlled and tore United open with a sublime opening period showing that saw them net a trio in just over twenty minutes.

This put the hosts completely dominant and had Manchester United all at sea. In advance of this fixture, the away side had let in just few in this league campaign but they disintegrated in the presence of City’s offensive ingenuity.

Initial Opportunities

The early indicators came soon when Vivianne Miedema used her strength to bundle Zigiotti off the ball, only to send her shot past the post. Hemp was at the center of everything early on, taking advantage of the space left by Riviere down United’s wing. Her crosses were posing a threat and led to an attempt for Hasegawa that Sandberg scrambled off the line.

United had several forays forward, their straightforward approach giving them options in the wings but they could not test Yamashita. Manchester City, in the meantime, commanded the ball, probing their opposition and trying to draw them out of their structure.

Scoring Spree

They converted their dominance with almost thirty minutes played when Fujino won the home team a corner. A ball to the back post was directed across goal by Bunny Shaw for Rebecca Knaak to head in. It was Manchester City's seventh goal from a cross of the term.

They added to their cushion with another pair of goals just before the half-time. When Rose was allowed to drive through the middle from defense, the play widened for the hosts. The key Casparij received possession on the right side before delivering a precise driven ball for Shaw to tap home. Four minutes later, they had a additional score after a rapid change in possession saw Lauren Hemp afforded the opportunity to fire a shot home from outside the box.

Final Period

The primary change came from Skinner at the interval as Melvine Malard was introduced for Terland but by this time it was ineffective to alter the outcome of the match. Former Manchester City player Park came nearest, rattling the post, but the away team were offensively poor and did not manage to produce a solitary shot on goal.

The home side, meanwhile, could have increased their advantage when a superb Miedema through ball sent Shaw away only for her to miss the chance but it was insignificant to the hosts. Previously unable to overcome any opponent who finished above them last season, City's side now have wins against Arsenal and United to place them in a strong position after nine games.
