Igor Jesus scored twice as the Premier League side rounded off the league phase of the European competition with a convincing triumph against Ferencvaros at the City Ground.

The hosts had previously guaranteed a berth in the next qualifying round and entered this fixture with a small chance of making the league's elite, although they needed several results to go their way.

That did not happen but this assured display will give Forest fans belief that their side can come through the two-legged play-off to reach the round of sixteen.

A Ferencvaros midfielder struck the post with a header inside the opening stages for the away team – coached by ex-Premier League forward Robbie Keane – but it was all Forest from that point forward.

Forest opened the scoring in the early stages when a delivery from midfield was deflected in by the defender and added a second shortly after – Jesus firing an effort in at the far post for his 10th goal of the season.

The forward's eleventh goal came soon after the restart when he made a perfectly-timed run to escape the defence and then drive an effort beyond the shot-stopper.

That goal ended Ferencvaros' hopes of mounting a recovery and instead Forest scored again when the excellent James McAtee scored from a penalty after a foul by the hapless Otvos inside the box on Dan Ndoye.

The Europa League knockout phase play-off draw is scheduled on the final Friday of January (midday UK time), where Nottingham Forest might face either Fenerbahce or Panathinaikos.

"It's more than the result, there was that feel about it. I want these players to do well as a unit, the entire team," said manager Sean Dyche.

"That was another stride forward, but it is a positive one."

Forest Analysis: Jesus Catches Eye as Recent Arrival Observes from Stands

Igor Jesus has been a revelation for Nottingham Forest in European competition this term with half of his 11 goals scored in the tournament.

His brace also means he has scored three goals in his last two games and the prospect of a challenge for his place in the forward line could be providing motivation.

Napoli striker Lorenzo Lucca was last week brought in temporarily and he was observing this game from the stands.

That may well have been on the striker's mind as he was outstanding against the opposition, producing two superb finishes and generally being a menace to the opposition backline with his speed and movement.

Jesus was not the only one in impressing, with McAtee producing his best performance in a Forest jersey since signing from the champions last summer, while the Swiss international also impressed.

These encouraging performances will give the club some fresh hope as they switch focus to increasing the gap from the bottom three when they host Crystal Palace on Sunday.

"All you can ask for is a reaction," continued the manager.

"I've never questioned their commitment or their dedication or integrity. It is just about displaying your ability.

"James was very good and Dan Ndoye was super sharp. Igor got another two and these are positive indicators."
