Eurovision Was Traditionally a Lighthearted Spectacle – However It Has Become a Strategic Method to Gloss Over Warfare.
An new acronym surfaced a few months into the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Known as WCNSF, it means “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This acronym is found only in Gaza, as stated by doctors like child health specialists. Normally, it is uncommon for doctors to care for a minor who has been bereaved of their complete family. But, there has been nothing “normal” about the widespread destruction in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been eradicated and the number of young amputees surpasses that of anywhere else in the world. No sense of normalcy about many doctors coming back from a devastated terrain with reports of children being intentionally shot at.
A Hell on Earth Regardless of a Supposed Ceasefire
Gaza remains a profound humanitarian disaster. Vital medicines and equipment are failing to reach those in need, and groups like Amnesty International contend that genocidal acts are continuing. The Israeli government disputes these accusations, just as it disavows everything it is implicated in. Yet as traumatised orphans are now suffering from the cold in temporary shelters, there is a little heartwarming news: apparently nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from continuing with its stated mission of “unity and cultural exchange.” The contest will continue to offer a blood-red carpet for Israel, even though at least four European countries have now boycotted in dissent. Since this, apparently, is what global togetherness manifests as.
Eurovision, of course prohibited Russia from competing in 2022 over the “grave situation in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza is completely different.
Contradictory Principles
Disregard the reality that Israel was accused of irregular participation methods last year in what appears to have been an attempt to manipulate Eurovision. Set aside the news that a toddler was reportedly killed in Gaza recently. Neglect the data that attacks by settlers and forced displacement in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Disregard the condition that global media are still blocked from independent reporting in Gaza. All of this, evidently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.
The Show Goes On Amidst Unimaginable Suffering
The contest reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – almost double the current lifespan of someone in Gaza now. The event will proceed, but it will likely never recapture the camp joy it once represented. A contest that was originally built on harmony has devolved into a cynical way to provide a cultural veneer for conflict.
