Democrats Criticize Trump After He Claims They Should Face Execution
Lawmakers from the Democratic party demonstrated outrage after former President Donald Trump alleged a coalition of Democratic congress members of being "traitors" and stated they should be arrested and sentenced "with execution" following their posting of a contentious video.
The Content That Provoked the Debate
The video footage, shared on earlier this week, features six Democratic congress members who in the past acted in military or security roles.
"Like us, you all made an vow to defend and support this national charter," the lawmakers stated in the 90-second video. "At present, the risks to our governing document aren't just from overseas, but from right here at home. Our regulations are explicit, you can reject unlawful commands, you can reject illegal orders, you should reject illegal orders. No one has to follow orders that break the statutes or our national charter."
The Former President's Angry Reaction
The clip reportedly trigger a furious reply from the previous commander-in-chief.
On Thursday morning, Trump posted on Truth Social: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional publication, he stated: "This constitutes really concerning, and Dangerous to our United States. Their words cannot be allowed to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third post, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also reposted a statement that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Democratic Leaders Answer
Following Trump's statements on Thursday, Top Democrats issued a unified statement censuring the statements.
"Political violence has no role in America," they declared. "Elected officials who participated in the video all served our nation with great loyalty and honor. We unequivocally denounce Donald Trump's disgusting and risky death threats against elected officials, and appeal to House Republicans to strongly do the same."
The party representatives also mentioned that they had been in touch with law enforcement "to guarantee the safety of these officials and their loved ones."
"Donald Trump must without delay delete these extreme social media posts and recant his aggressive language before he gets someone killed," the statement continued.
Lawmakers' Strong Reaction
The lawmakers who participated in the video also issued a response.
"We identify as former service members and security experts who care for this United States and swore an oath to defend and support the constitution of the United States," they declared. "This commitment lasts a lifetime, and we intend to maintain it. No intimidation, pressure, or call for violence will prevent us from that important obligation."
"The significant point is that the former president considers it punishable by death for us to reiterate the law," they added. "Our service members should know that we have their support as they fulfill their pledge to the national charter and obligation to adhere to only proper directives. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our responsibility."
They stated: "The entire nation must come together and censure the president's requests for our murder and ideological conflict. This is a moment for principled stance."
Additional Partisan Comments
The Opposition leader also condemned Trump's comments and posted on online networks: "Let's be crystal clear: the President of the United States is demanding the execution of public representatives."
He added: "This is an outright THREAT. All senators, every Representative, the entire nation – regardless of party – should denounce this immediately and absolutely."
The Republican House speaker defended Trump's allegation that the Democrats had participated in "rebellion", characterizing the video as "wildly inappropriate", adding: "It is very harmful, you have important representatives of the legislature telling military personnel to disobey orders, I think that's historic in US history."
The GOP official also allegedly informed the press that in what he examined of Trump's posts, Trump was "defining the offense of rebellion" but that "attorneys have to analyze the terminology and establish all that."
White House Reaction
During a White House press conference on that day, when questioned by a media member, "Is the president want to put to death elected officials?", the White House press secretary responded: "Certainly not."
"We should understand about what the ex-commander in chief is addressing," the spokesperson declared. "There are active officials of the US Congress who conspired to arrange a video message to individuals of the US military, to active duty service members urging them to defy the commander in chief's lawful orders."
She stated: "The purity of our defense system rests on the command structure, and if that chain of command is broken, it can cause people getting killed, it can result in chaos, and that is exactly what these elected officials ... are fundamentally encouraging."
