China Sentences Notorious Myanmar Scam Syndicate Figures to Death
One Chinese judicial body has condemned several prominent members of a notorious Burmese mafia to execution as Beijing persists in its efforts on fraudulent networks in South East Asia.
Overall, 21 Bai family individuals and collaborators were convicted of fraud, murder, injury and various crimes, reported a state media document posted on the judicial portal.
The family is among a handful of organized crime groups that gained influence in the last two decades and transformed the poor isolated region of the town into a wealthy center of casinos and red-light districts.
Recently they shifted to illegal operations in which many of smuggled individuals, several of them Chinese, are caught, mistreated and forced to scam others in criminal enterprises estimated at billions of dollars.
Details of the Judgment
Mafia leader the patriarch and his son the younger Bai were included in the group of figures condemned to execution by the judicial body. Another individual, A third figure and A fourth person were the additional convicted.
A couple of figures of the clan syndicate were given delayed executions. Several were sentenced to life in prison, while additional individuals were received jail terms varying from three to 20 years.
This family, who commanded their own militia, created 41 compounds to host their online fraud activities and casinos, government reported.
Scale of Illegal Activities
Such criminal enterprises included over 29bn local currency ($4.1 billion; £3.1 billion). These activities also caused the fatalities of several from China nationals, the self-inflicted death of one and several assaults, official sources reported.
The strict penalties delivered by the judicial body are part of the Chinese initiative to eradicate the large scam operations in Southeast Asia - and issue a firm message to other criminal groups.
History of the Families
These families rose to power in the recent decades with the help of a military leader - who is in charge of Myanmar's regime. The leader had wanted to support partners in the town after removing its former warlord.
Within the clans, the Bais were "the most powerful", the son earlier stated to official sources.
Back then, our Bai family was the dominant in each of the government and armed circles," the individual remarked in a report about the Bai family, broadcast on Chinese state media in July.
During the documentary, a worker at their illegal operations recalled the harm he had suffered there: besides being beaten, he had his fingernails removed with instruments and two of his fingers severed with a blade.
Additional Charges
Bai Yingcang is included in those who were given to execution recently. The individual has also been separately found guilty of organizing to traffic and make 11 tonnes of narcotics, state media announced.
Decline of the Clans
The families' fall happened in 2023 as circumstances changed.
For years Beijing has urged the Myanmar junta to rein in fraudulent activities in the area.
Recently, the Chinese police announced arrest warrants for the most prominent individuals of these clans.
The patriarch, the Bai family's patriarch, was among the individuals who were transferred to China from the country in recent months.
For what reason is the authorities putting such extensive work to pursue the clans?" a official stated in the July report.
The purpose is to caution other people, no matter who you are, your location, when you commit such heinous acts targeting the citizens, you will be held accountable."
